Cairns |
Travellers choose Cairns for its tropical wonders, bright greenery, and endless sunny days, but sometimes mother nature has other plans. With monsoon storms and floods being a common occurrence, as well as the occasional dangerous animals roaming about.
Which Season?
Instead of the typical four seasons, of Summer, Spring, Autumn, and winter, Queensland’s weather is a bit different. Instead of having a wet or dry season, with the wet season falling between November to April, and Dry between April to October. There are pros and cons for each season, with the dry season warm temperatures and low rainfall. Whereas the wet season is mild temperatures with an accumulation of rainfall.
Wet Season
Wet season obviously has more rain and has a high chance of storms. This can put a damper on your outdoor activities, cancelling them altogether if it gets really bad. An increase in rain can also reduce the visibility of the underwater reefs and can cause currents to be too strong to swim. Tropical monsoons are common and can lead to floods and unsafe areas blocked out. However, as long as you don’t travel during the most common storm weeks, you can easily avoid these issues. As well, due to the accumulation of rain, the area is bright with greenery.
Dry Season
The dry season lets you skip the rain, but can be jam-packed in swelteringly hot days. if you aren’t used to hot and humid days, these may be unbearable, with a lot of tourists finding it hard to do daytime activities without continuous breaks in air con hotel rooms. However, as long as you are aware, and plan ahead for this scorching weather, this should only be a small setback.
Stinger Season
Stinger season is well known to all Aussie locals, coming around every year to invade the coast’s shores. Jellyfish pop up all over between November to May, with each jellyfish’s sting packing quite a punch to anyone in their way. Numerous tourists and locals have been stung by these creatures, causing severe pain and sometimes even death. Protection including stinger wetsuits and netting on beaches has to be installed in this time, but it is still a risk when swimming during this time.
The Verdict
Cairns can be fantastic throughout the year, with any risks or issues easily overcome with Solutions. However, the best time for weather, price, and safety is between April to September. This lets you miss out on those extremely hot days and you can even skip the busy Christmas holiday crowds!
